Poodle (Standard) History

What many people may be surprised to hear, is that the Poodle was originally a hunting dog; a water retriever in ponds, rivers, and marshes. The Poodle's name is French "Caniche", comes from canard (sauvage), the wild ducks he brings back to dry land with such mastery. The Poodle dates back to the sixteenth century. According to some sources. the Poodle first appeared in Germany, while others believe it originated in Denmark. France, or the Piedmont (foot of the Alps).

Another popular argument is that he is descended from the Barbet, a breed of French hunting dog, now extinct. The Barbet was a large. rustic dog with a curly, woolly coat (black and white, dark gray. or white and chestnut) who was used to retrieve game in swampy areas. By selective breeding over a period of years. it is believed that the Barbet became the Poodle.

In addition to being a good hunting dot, the Poodle is a good watchdog and truffle dog (good for finding truffles). Additionally Poodles often appear in circuses and variety shows as acrobats and performers.
